Top Ecommerce Blog Posts and Article for October 2011

This was the view from my house down the driveway after the freak snowstorm this past weekend. It’s amazing the damage snow can do when the trees still have most of their leaves. I just got power back today, so I’m returning to the digital world full-time.

Here’s what I found to be interesting and useful last month from around the web…

One Powerful Way to Speed Up Your Site and Sales

A faster site is a better site” – me

That’s my quote for the day. But don’t take my word for it.

Google thinks speed is important. So important it’s now a ranking factor.

Customers think speed is important. So important that nearly a third will leave your site if it does not load quickly.

I’ll hazard to guess that [Google + Customers] pretty much encompasses your entire sales funnel.

So now you believe speed is important. That’s the first step. The next step is what to do about it…

Optimize

I wrote a blog post that covers how to speed up your website. It covers things such as enabling compression, using static caching, and combining files for faster page loads. It’s a few easy steps to make your site somewhat faster.

But it’s not going to speed up the bulk of your site’s load time.

Images

The majority of the time it takes for your pages to load is due to your images. They are the largest items in terms of bytes, and are usually the largest in terms of number of items on a page.

Sure, you can optimize the images, shrink them down, compress them for optimal web viewing, but this only gets you so far.

What would really help is if these images were able to load faster to your customers’ computers. So someone browsing in Europe and someone browsing in Idaho would be able to download your images at the same fast speed.

Enter the CDN!

That’s where a Content Delivery Network (CDN) comes into play. a CDN takes your images from your website, and distributes them across the globe to various locations (known as nodes). Using geo-filtering technology, the CDN node closest to your customer delivers the images and content that are on the CDN.

What does this mean?

It means your visitors will be able to download your images / video faster due to the data being much closer to them. Add in the compression and optimization to your web pages we mentioned previously, and everything on your site will be sped up.

We’ll even run tests before and after to show you the speed increase. It’s a simple way to make your customers’ experience better, and to hopefully increase sales. Mobile Support in ShopSite 11 SP1 – What You Need to Know

Mobile shopping is only on the rise these days. I’ve read a number of articles predicting 10-15 percent of *ALL* 2011 holiday ecommerce sales will come from mobile/tablet devices. Your store’s percentage may vary, but you can no longer ignore this growing segment.

Luckily, the latest version of ShopSite, version 11 service pack 1 (SP1) helps with built-in mobile support…

General tips and articles about mobile commerce

The Getelastic.com blog has two recent posts that are a great read:

10 Key Highlights on mCommerce

Holiday mCommerce

Internet Retailer has an article about ecommerce with an emphasis on mobile purchasing trends this holiday season.

ShopSite 11 sp1 to the rescue!

With the latest version of ShopSite ecommerce software, you can now create a mobile version of your website without needing a full-time designer. But where do you start?

Lauren Hills has some great basic tips on preparing your website for mobile support. Start with this to get an overview of what you need to do.

Next, watch this short 4 minute video from ShopSite on setting up mobile support in your ShopSite store.

If you’re using custom templates, you’ll need to make a few tweaks to your existing templates. Read ShopSite’s handy new SP1 tags article to see what changes you’ll need to make.

But the most important step…

After you’ve done all this, make sure you TEST, TEST, TEST! Try your new mobile site out on a variety of smartphones (Android, iPhone, iPad, etc…). Try switching between mobile and full website modes. See what works and what doesn’t.

Optimize your mobile pages to only include your best sellers and popular items. Make sure it’s easy to navigate, and easy for customers to switch to your main website. Complete a purchase from your phone to insure the entire process flows smoothly and has no hiccups.

I’m always amazed when merchants launch a new service / feature, but fail to adequately test it. I know it’s a pain and the least fun part of the process, but it’s the most important step in my book.

Hopefully this gives you a starting point for making your ShopSite ecommerce store more mobile friendly. I’d love to hear your feedback and real world stories about implementing mobile support in your store…

ShopSite 11 SP1 – A Must Have Upgrade

ShopSite has just released version 11 SP1 of its award-winning ecommerce software. We are excited about this new version, as it has a number of great new features and enhancements.

This version has been extensively tested by ShopSite, by us, and a number of our merchants, and is a “must have” upgrade for any ShopSite merchant.

Here are a few highlighted new features and tips with 11 SP1…

Amazon Checkout

It seems like everyone has an Amazon account these days. Now you can make shopping in your store as easy as shopping at Amazon!

Simply sign up for Amazon checkout as a merchant, add an Amazon checkout button to your cart, and you’re up and running. Your customers can now click the Amazon button, sign into their Amazon account, and easily complete their purchase from *your* store.

Amazon Checkout Button

It’s a great way to add another payment option that many of your customers will use and appreciate. And easier checking out means better sales numbers!

Google Product Search updates

SP1 adds support for all the new Google Product Search requirements – Availability, Category, and Apparel related changes. If you use Google Product Search to submit your products, you’ll need this version of ShopSite to keep it working seamlessly.

If you sell apparel, you can now map your ordering options (either Basic or Advanced) to submit color, size, gender, and/or age group. This is now required by Google.

Tip: If you previously used an extra product field for Availability or Google Product Category, you can easily map these to the new fields in ShopSite. Simply download the SKU field and the extra product fields that correspond to these options, and re-upload mapping the extra product fields to the new availability and product category fields in 11 SP1. (*** If all of your products are “in stock” for this field, that is the default availability option in SP1. You can simply disable your extra product field from being sent to Google and you’re all set.)

Mobile Website support

A recent Internet Retailer report stated that mobile is expected to account for 10-15% of all holiday purchases this year. Although your individual store may not see this high a percentage, it’s certain that mobile shoppers will visit your store this Christmas.

Now it’s easy to add a mobile website to your store. With 11 SP1, you can enable this new feature (Preferences -> Mobile), set up your header, footer, layout, etc… and ShopSite will create a mobile version of your site, from your main web pages through check out. Shoppers will have the option to view your mobile site or switch back to your main website.

Not sure how to populate a mobile site? Check out this blog post from Lauren, Is Your Site Ready For Mobile Commerce. It contains some great tips and best practices to make a great mobile site.

If you do enable mobile support, make sure you test it on a variety of mobile phones and devices to insure it will work correctly, and to your liking. Note that mobile pages can not support PHP code, and javascript should be used sparingly if at all. The default mobile templates will avoid these issues and use mobile best practices.

If you use custom templates, you’ll need to add a few new ShopSite tags to make it work:

In the <head> region of your page:

[-- IF SS_MOBILE --][-- MOBILE_JAVASCRIPT --][-- END_IF --]

Near the top of your page where you want the switch to mobile/regular site links:

[-- IF SS_MOBILE --][-- SS_MOBILE_REDIRECT --][-- END_IF --]
[-- IF SS_MOBILE_PC --]&nbsp;&nbsp;[-- SS_MOBILE_PC --][-- END_IF --]

Google +1 button

As the popularity of the Google +1 button increases, many people think it will be another signal to help boost SEO ranking. With Sp1, it’s a snap to add this new button to your pages.

If you have custom templates,  two new tags are needed:

In the <head> region:

[-- IF GOOGLE_PLUSONE --][-- GOOGLE_PLUSONE script --][-- END_IF --]

Where you want the button to appear:

[-- IF GOOGLE_PLUSONE --]<div id="plusone">[-- GOOGLE_PLUSONE tag --]</div>[-- END_IF --]

Iframe Order Anywhere links

This is a great addition for anyone that uses their own buy now buttons but wishes they could have the price / text update automatically. Now you can embed iframe code in your custom pages and whenever you update the price, description, or ordering options for a product in ShopSite, your web pages will update automatically.

Move advanced ordering options

Sounds like a simple thing, but this will save merchants a lot of time that use the new advanced ordering options. Now you can drag and drop the order of these items. No more putting a new size at the bottom. Simply drag it up above the other sizes, in the middle, or wherever you want it to appear.

If you’re hosted with us, you may request the ShopSite 11 SP1 upgrade on our website.

If you’re not hosted with us, and your host is not offering the latest v11 of ShopSite, we offer a seamless ShopSite migration to bring you over to LexiConn with no downtime, and little to no re-work. And you’ll have access to our numerous add-on modules as well as personalized support by everyone here that knows ShopSite inside and out.  :)

ShopSite Tip: Multiple Currencies With DynamicConverter.com

When you have an online store that ships internationally, displaying your products in another currency can be helpful to your customers, but which currency do you select?  ShopSite supports the display of an alternate currency so you could pick one to display but you’ll then have to keep the exchange rate updated on a regular basis.

Dynamic Converter, a free script available at www.dynamicconverter.com, resolves both of these items for you by allowing your customers to select the alternate currency they want to see and the exchange rates update automatically every day.

What Does It Look Like?

When installed on a page, their script automatically detects any prices that appear on the page.  It then displays the currently selected alternate currency below the regular price and turns both price fields into a link.

In our example above you will see the regular price, with the EU price displayed below it.

When a visitor clicks on either price a small pop-up will appear where they may select from a variety of currency options.  Once selected, all alternate currencies will update to the new setting.

How Do I Install It?

Installation with ShopSite takes just a few minutes.  Once you sign up with dynamicconveter.com your “Dynamic Converter Settings” page on their site will provide a list of settings that control the script and near the bottom will be a box with the JavaScript code to place on your site.

  • TIP: On the “Dynamic Converter Settings” page be sure you add your secure server name to the “Domains List” field if you do not have your own SSL certificate.  For example: tan.secure-host.com

You may have slightly different steps to activate the script depending on if you use custom templates, but basically you will copy their code and paste it into the following fields in ShopSite:

  • Preferences > Layout Settings > Footer
  • Commerce Setup > Order System > Shopping Cart > Text at the bottom of the Shopping Cart screen
  • Commerce Setup > Order System > Checkout > Text at the bottom of the Checkout screen
  • Commerce Setup > Order System > Confirmation > Text at the bottom of the Confirmation screen
  • Commerce Setup > Order System > Thank You > Text at the bottom of the Thank You screen

If you find the script doesn’t run on your More Information pages you may need to turn on the Preferences > More Info Pages > Display Page Footer field, or add the code to your More Information template.

With your dynamicconverter.com account you will also be able to view detailed instructions they have written on how to install the script with ShopSite.

Working Sample

To see the script working with ShopSite please see our sample page here:
http://shopsite-demo.lexiconn.com/currencyconverter.html

The script is also in place on the shopping cart screens of that demo store, so when you add a product to your cart you will see the alternate currency there too.

Dynamic Converter is an excellent and free way to add additional currency options to your site.  For more details visit them at:
