Four Methods to Handle Taking Phone Orders in ShopSite

Depending on how your business operates, you may find yourself or your staff entering customer orders directly into ShopSite as part of your daily routine. If that’s the case then you may run across a notification message when entering orders that says:

Ship to Zip/Postal Code has changed. Shipping rates need to be recalculated. Please press Return to Cart

The Cause

This behavior results from a cookie being set on the browser when shipping and billing information is entered on the billing screen. This cookie contains the addresses used when placing the order. By default this cookie stays on the browser for one year once the order is complete. When you return to place another order, ShopSite reads the information from the cookie and this is where the problem occurs.

The Cure

Dealing with this can be rather annoying so what can be done to remedy the issue? There are actually four solutions that can be used.

phone-160429_640The first is to instruct your store to remove the cookie once an order is complete. This is done at the Thank You stage of the order process. You can enable this behavior by going to:

Commerce -> Order System -> Thank You and checking “Remove Shopper Cookie.”

There is one drawback with this option though. While it makes things easier for you as the store owner; your customers will no longer have their shipping address saved on their browser unless they are a registered user and have it stored in their account.

If you only need to enter orders occasionally the next option may be a better solution. The second option is to clear the cookie from the browser. You can do this by clearing your browser’s cookies to clean things up. The specific cookie that stores this information is called SSMBSuperCookie and you can search for it in your stored cookies if you wish to remove it directly rather than clearing all your cookies.

The third option is to use private browsing. All the major browsers today offer some type of private browsing. Chrome calls it Incognito, for IE it’s InPrivate, a Private window in Firefox, and with Safari it’s Private Browsing. When you use “private mode” any cookies placed in the browser will be discarded when the window is closed. Open another private window and you are starting fresh.

If you are entering orders quite often and don’t want to inconvenience your customers then option four might be the best solution for you. At your request we can add a script to your LexiConn hosted store to clear the cookie from your browser. Once installed, you or your staff simply need to call the script from your browser and the cookie will be cleared; allowing you to easily enter another order.
