Tracking Google Shopping Referrals & Conversions With Google Analytics

If you’re using Google Analytics on your store there’s an easy change you can make to your Google Analytics account to show the referrals and sales which are coming from Google Shopping.

Advanced Filters

When on the Home screen of your Google Analytics account click on Admin, then on the list of Profiles click on the profile for your site.

Profile Menu Tabs

Profile Menu Tabs

A menu with multiple tabs will appear, like shown here on the right.

Click on Filters > New Filter > Custom Filter > Advanced.

It’s a long list of clicks, but you’ll now be on the Advanced Filter screen with a lot of blank fields.

Filter Settings

It may seem like a strange-looking form, but the hardest part was getting to it.  The settings are easy and we’ve listed them here:

Filter Name: Google Shopping
Field A -> Extract A: Select “Campaign Medium” from the list, put “organic” in the box (no quotes)
Field B -> Extract B: Select “Referral” from the list, put “(\?|&)source=productsearch” in the box (no quotes)
Output To -> Constructor: Select “Campaign Source”, put “Google Shopping” in the box (no quotes)
Field A Required: Yes
Field B Required: Yes
Override Output Field: Yes
Case Sensitive: No

Here’s a screenshot showing what it should look like.

Note: The form cuts off the “Extract B” field, so be sure you enter the full value mentioned above.

Using Source/Medium in Google Analytics

Now that you have this filter in place,  you will see “Google Shopping / organic” on your reports.

In your Google Analytics account click on Conversions > Ecommerce > Overview > Source/Medium and you will be able to see Visits and Revenue data for people coming in through Google Shopping links.

Look Out For Changes

Google’s always changing things (remember when Google Shopping was called Froogle?) so the information above may need to be changed in the future.

Analytics may change the menu options to click on, and Google may change how the referral data looks that is sent when a user clicks on a Google Shopping link, so over time this post will become out of date.  If you find the steps are no longer correct of if the filter’s not tracking for you please post a comment down below.  We’ll take a look to see if Google moved things around or changed how the links are tracked.
